- In January 2008, a final ruling went into effect regarding minimum
reflectivity. With the exception of the Parking series, Adopt A Highway, Brown Informational or Blue Informational series, ALL SIGNS including Street Name I.D. Signs must be manufactured with a minimum High Intensity Prismatic Reflective sheeting.
- Under this new ruling, the use of Engineer Grade sheeting would be
obsolete within a year when used on Warning, Regulatory and Street Name I.D. Signs.
- High Intensity Prismatic sheeting provides a guarantee that the
product will meet the minimum requirement for a 10 year period.
- In light of the new mandate, utilizing an inventory system and sign
dating system would permit proper tracking of sign installations. Documentation of sign type, date of installation and location can assist when and if a liability situation arises. The application of a dating sticker on the back of the sign shows the date of installation and ownership of the sign in the case of theft, and proof of compliance with the minimum reflectivity requirements if the sign has been installed within the 10 year period.
- Municipalities have a 7 year period from the date of the ruling to
change Regulatory and Warning signs and 10 years from the date of ruling to change over Street I.D. signs.
